January 2011 Newsletter - Superbowl Sunday
Superbowl Sunday
Argueably the biggest yearly sporting event in the United States,
the big daddy of them all, the Superbowl, is coming to Cowboy's Stadium
February 6. Restaurants, hotels, and bars will be full to capacity with
thousands of out of town guests, media, and NFL personnel. Pioneer Wine
has got you covered with a wide variety of large format wines tailor-made for
exactly this kind of occasion.
Jean-Louis Chave:
2007 Hermitage Rouge
The Chave family has been growing grapes at Hermitage since 1481. They have a reputation for making good wine in poor years, and excellent wine in good ones. They use low yeilding vines (average age 60 years) and a late harvest to produce the ripest fruit, and there is virtually no intervention in the winemaking and bottling with no filtration. At 93 points from Robert Parker, the wine and the winemaker are a standout in the Hermitage appellation. 1.5L bottles are in stock now and ready to ship.
Cavus Vineyards
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Made by rockstar winemaker Dave Phinney, Cavus Vineyards was named "Winery to Watch" by the San Francisco Chonicle in it's "Cult Cabs" article. At 91 points, Parker sings the praises of Cavus, calling it an "an elegant, Margaux-like red revealing subtle notes of flowers, earth, and red, blue fruits, medium body, and beautiful density, purity, and overall symmetry..." 1.5L magnums of the 06 Cavus Cabernet are available in stock in our warehouses now and are ready to ship!
Domaine de La Janasse
2006 Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvee de Vieilles Vignes
Christophe Sabon at Domaine de la Janasse is obviously doing something
right. His Chateaufneuf du Papes have consistently scored well into the
90 point range, and this 06 Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is no different. At 95
points from Parker, it is "inky/blue/purple, with massive aromatics, an
unctuous texture, and superb length on the palate... enormously endowed...
very pure, with sweet tannins as well as amazing length." 1.5L
magnums are in stock and ready to ship.
Amuse Bouche
2006 Vin Perdu
Anyone familiar with the French dish pain perdu knows that what some might think of as leftovers are actually far from it. Vin Perdu comes from the highly sought after winemaker Heidi Barrett. It is crafted, as Heidi likes to say "from scratch," because the blend is comprised of remnants from La Sirena and Amuse Bouche holdings throughout Napa Valley that were not needed for other wines. Each 5L magnum bears Heidi's signature. Awarded 94 points by Wine Enthusiast and made a featured Cellar Selection, Vin Perdu has a "creamy mouthfeel and flavors of blackberry marmalade, dark bitter chocolate, licorice and peppery spices." Complex and refined, a limited number of 5L bottles of the 06 Vin Perdu are in stock and ready to ship now.
There are many additional large format wines available in our warehouses and
ready to ship. For more details, consult your sales representative, and
good luck with Super Bowl Weekend!
