And Co is the family-owned 8.8ha property in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Positioned on a north-facing hillside site on calcareous soils with slopes up to 30 degrees, the And Co Estate is one of the best viticultural sites in New Zealand. The pedigree of site is proven by the fame of the Te Mata Coleraine vineyard – located nearby on the same soils, slope and aspect. ‘This is a site winemakers dream of’, says Owner and Winemaker Gabrielle Simmers. ‘You only have to walk into the vineyard and taste the intensity and complexity of fruit to understand the potential of the terroir. With views over the Pacific Ocean, vineyards, olive groves and volcanoes it’s not a bad place to work either.’
Gabrielle Simmers spent a decade searching for the perfect site to produce a unique, elegant, old world style New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Gabrielle is a firm believer in traditional methods of farming to promote the natural health of the vines, and a winemaking process which relies on the quality of the terroir alone.
The And Co aesthetic is also unique. ‘It represents our interest in design’ says Gabrielle’s partner Greg Collinge. Gabrielle and partner Greg Collinge co-own And Co Ltd, and sister businesses Millar Road and Esther Diamond. Millar Road is a leading luxury vineyard resort, based at the And Co Ltd Estate. Esther Diamond is a design company which works with leading New Zealand artists to create a range of luxury designer homeware.
Gabrielle chose the crown cap for their first release: ‘The crown cap is a perfect seal, and it reflects the philosophy of using traditional methods and innovative ideas to create a beautiful daily drop.’ Invented by William Painter of Maryland in 1892 the crown cap has been an enduring success within the beer, Champagne and soft drink industries. The distinctive design was recently recognized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art where a bottle of The Supernatural will be included in a major upcoming exhibition entitled ‘How Wine Became Modern’. And Co Ltd was also recently awarded the coveted Gold Pin at the New Zealand Best Design Awards, recognizing the most innovative product and brand design.
