Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige is closer to Austria not only in culture and language, but in climate. Pinot Grigio, Gewurtztraminer, Sylvaner, Kerner, and Müller-Thurgau are just a few of the white varietals that this cooler growing area is renowned for. In the Müller-Thurgaus, the sugars don't tend to be quite as high as they are in Germany, nor are the wines as redolent of petrol, but they do express a lovely quartzy minerality, as well as a soft baking spice that is alluring, beautifully balanced, and exquisite with not only Northern Italian and Alpine foods, but Southeast Asian foods, as well.
