Chinaco Tequila
The Chinaco Warriors were a group of mid-19th-century land owners led by Manuel Gonzalez. This is the only region outside of Jalisco (it's produced in Tamaulipas) that is licensed to carry the tequila name for its agave-based liquors. Arguably, its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico imparts a distinctive aging environment compared to the Jalisco Highlands. Teq. de la Gonzalez began producing small batch tequilas in 1977, and first introduced them to the US in 1983.
Small batches of tequila are double distilled from fully matured 100% agave, and most of it is aged in Scotch barrels, as opposed to Bourbon barrels, which imparts a slight peatiness rather than the usual brown sugar notes.
The Blanco Tequila has a nose of Mexican oregano, allspice, and aloe; its smoothness and balance has been lauded by the likes of Eric Asimov and Frank Pial. Unlike many other tequilas, this one produces a pleasant tingling sensation, versus an overwhelming burn, allowing the flavor to shine through. The Reposado displays a richer nose of white corn, cedar, and a touch of spearmint, with a similarly full mouthfeel. The Anejo gives off a luscious butterscotch bouquet, with a distinctive peatiness; it is unbelievably smooth and with the complexity and smokiness of a good single malt Scotch.
These are standout tequilas to be enjoyed alone, or showcased.
