Grattamacco

Grattamacco

Grattamacco was founded in 1977. It is situated on top of a hill that faces the sea between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, at 100m above sea level. The area, which is becoming quite interesting for Cabernet Sauvignon production,  enjoys a dry climate with consistent warm temperatures at the end of summer. Its first production was a 1978 blend of Cab Sauv, Sangiovese, and Merlot.

The estate extends over an area of about 32 hectares, of which 12 are vineyards and 3 are olive groves. The remaining area is forest. In the steep and illy vineyards, with an average eight percent incline, vines are trained partly to Cordone speronato and alternatively to Guyot, with yields of around 6 to 7 tons per hectare. The average age of the vines is 20 years. During harvest, the grapes are carefully selected, and fermentation begins in truncated cone-shaped 800-liter oak vats, with manual stirring and indigenous yeasts during the long maceration process.

Wines are blended and aged in French barriques for 12 to 18 months, with further bottle aging to more than 6 months. The estate is certified organic by the AIAB.
