Mas Doix

Mas Doix

Mas Doix was established in the Priorat village of Poboleda at the foot of Monsant in October, 1998, but the Doix-Llagostera family winemaking tradition began in 1850.

The Doix family originates from Poboleda and has been involved Priorat viticulture for the last 5 generations. After the phylloxera plague, they replanted their Garnacha and CariƱena vines with American rootstock. Up until 1998, all their grapes went into the Poboleda coop, a common destination for many Priorat grapes before the wine took off, but with the 1999 vintage, they began bottling under their own label.

Today the family owns 20 hectares of vineyards. "Les Salanques," at an altitude of 350 meters is planted with Garnacha and CariƱena (and makes up 5 hectares); "Les Crestes" makes up 7 hectares and is planted with Garnacha and Merlot at an altitude of 320 meters; "Mas de l'Osso," planted with Garnacha, Merlot, and Syrah, sits 300 meters above sea level and covers 6 hectares; and "Els Ullastres" and "La Venteta" are each 1 hectare and are planted with Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, respectively.

The vineyards, 70 to 100 years-old, are planted on brown, slaty licorella soils which are extremely high in minerals and are a key factor contributing to the quality and aging potential of Priorat wines. Mas Doix (pronounced "mahss doysh") also keeps yields low and only picks the best grapes. The vinification process is meticulous, starting with the rigorous selection in the vineyard, and later selection on the belt in the cellar. The wine undergoes minimal handling and maceration lasts for 5 weeks in temperature controlled
