Rafael Palacios
After having collaborated with some winegrowers from the area, and attracted by the potential of the Godello variety, Rafael Palacios started his own project in long-neglected vineyards of Valdeorras in 2004. The extreme topography and weak production of the soil led him to this ancient wine-producing region filled with terraced sites. Historically, the vineyard's small parcels were divided by drawing lots or “Sorte” in Galician.
The vineyards are still composed of twelve parcels, with a total surface area of 7.5 hectares of the Godello variety, with terraced vines ranging from 18 to 40 years old. The wine is fermented in large oak fondres, as he employed with the Rioja Blanco “Placet” from his family’s Palacios Remondo estate. This allows for the textured and oxygenating benefits of the wood: fermentation, without the addition of toasty or vanilla flavors from new barriques.
